News & Upcoming Events

Carnival Planning Committee

Carnival planning is just around the corner. Our first meeting will be held in January, so keep an eye out for more information on dates and times. We have a few open spots on our committee and if interested, please email Jodi Enia at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. All are welcome!

Mustang Mondays

The first half of the school year our students focused on Spanish language education during Mustang Monday specials. The second half of the year will bring additional enrichment offerings, including a drum clinic led by music teacher Mr. Houston.

Entrepreneur Club

The next meeting of the Entrepreneur Club is this Friday, January 6th after school in the Library. Newcomers welcome! Congratulations to our three new Entrepreneur Club businesses: DucTapestry, Rees’ Handiwork, and J & S Distributing. Great job at the Winter Concert and Holiday Fair!

FREE SALAD FRIDAYS

Thanks to a grant received for our PTA Wellness committee, ALL KILGOUR STUDENTS are able to receive a FREE SALAD on Fridays during the month of January!

Our cafeteria offers a variety of options for students each day for both breakfast and lunch! Log on to our www.cps-k12.org to view menu offerings, ingredients, alternative menu options and more!

Stay tuned for more information on our School and PTA wellness initiatives.

We also were donated a tower garden (normally valued at $1,000). Our Wellness committee and teachers are meeting to help plan how we can use this portable garden to incorporate science, Math, language arts, and, of course, healthy eating into the classroom using the new equipment.

First in Math, etc.

For the past couple years, the First in Math website has been a great supplemental tool for Kilgour’s primary grades. As parents of those students may know, our students haven’t had access to the site so far this year. The administration has informed us that the district has had many issues with our order requests for many things, from First in Math subscriptions to art supplies. Kilgour is not alone in being affected; it is a district wide issue.

Principal Cook-Frazier has been communicating with the district. They have taken action and we will finally receive First in Math IDs soon. Please look for further communication about this soon. In addition, the PTA, with administration, staff, and teachers are planning now for next year and investigating what we can order from the district early, or fund ourselves.

Baby Houston

Kilgour Music Teacher Andy Houston and his wife Loni have welcomed baby McKinley Ida Jane, born December 30th at 10.5 lbs and 21 inches. Mom, baby, and family are doing well.

Did You Know?

Kilgour Sports Boosters

If you have questions about Kilgour School sports participation, policies, schedules, or simply want to contact someone, you can go to kilgoursports.org for just about anything Mustangs related-- spiritwear too!

Student Arrival

All students are to enter the building through the front doors unless escorted to the play area by a parent. Please be sure to call the office at 363-3000 by 10am to report your child’s absence from school, as well as send a note to verify the absence upon your child’s return.

Student Dismissal

To help maintain an orderly dismissal, please send a note if there are changes to your child’s dismissal routine. Teachers’ phones go to voicemail and there is not always time for them to review calls prior to Dismissal. If students are being picked up prior to Dismissal (Early Dismissal), we ask that students are picked up prior to 3 pm to reduce class disruption, traffic, and confusion at Dismissal.

Communications from Kilgour School

Are you missing important information from Kilgour School or Cincinnati Public Schools? Do you receive too much information? You can use Powerschool to register for, or change the way you receive, school announcements from CPS and/or Principal Cook-Frazier.

Not signed up for Powerschool yet? To enroll, pick up a form from the info racks outside the main office, or visit the district site. In addition to messages from Kilgour School, Powerschool provides parents with information on student grades, progress, test scores, attendance, discipline incidents, etc.

Severe Weather & Emergency Closing Procedures

Winter brings lots of things...including inclement weather! Please review thefollowing information from CPS in regard to communication plans and inclement weather procedures.

Lost and Found

Kids lose stuff… which can sometimes be found again. Our school’s Lost and Found can be found on the Lower Level. Please be sure to check often if you have missing items. Items are donated to area charities at the end of every month.

Please be sure to label your child’s belongings (coat, hat, gloves, lunch box, backpack, etc.).

Kilgour Community Corner

We all need help or inspiration from time to time. This month, consider making this unique dish perfect for nearly any occasion:

Crispy Brussels Sprouts Salad, with Sweet Chili Vinaigrette

Delicious. If you don’t have the time or a handy wok, you can test try it at E + O Kitchen in Hyde Park Square. It’s an award winning recipe for them from the Chicago Food Buddha.

Kilgour parent Aubrey Backscheider offered up this tastiness. Do you have any household tricks, study tips, or recipes you’d like to share with us? Maybe you have an interesting historical fact or mindbending puzzle to torment us with?

Please send them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. today!

Thank You!

The past few weeks have been busy ones for our school and community. So many of our peers and neighbors have helped and shown generosity in myriad ways.

We’d like to thank everyone who took ornaments from The Giving Tree and returned them with gifts for those members of the Kilgour community facing hardship this year. This program is the essence of the season.

We’d like to thank everyone who was able to contribute to the Holiday Staff Gift Fund. The people who educate and care for our children each school day are a vital part of our community and we believe showing them our gratitude for what they do is so important.

We’d like to thank the Kilgour School Student Council and everyone who helped them organize and run the Kindness Canes program. What a fantastic way to help our children share their appreciation and gratitude with one another.

We’d like to thank all the Holiday Fair volunteers who gave their time and energy to provide the gift inventory, helped the students select their gifts, ran the registers, and wrapped for the little ones who needed help.

Synopsis Submissions

We welcome submissions from the Kilgour community. For the rest of the 2016-17 school year, Synopsis will be published on the first of the month. Please submit all articles to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. on or before the Friday preceding the end of the prior month.

The Synopsis point person will make every attempt to include content received after the Friday deadline; however, inclusion of late submissions is not guaranteed. The Synopsis point person will respond to your email/submission within 72 hours of its receipt. If you do not receive an email confirming receipt, please assume that your submission was not received and resend it.
