As you become familiar with Kilgour, you will discover a true community at work. By becoming involved in your child’s classroom, you will become a contributing member of this great community. Your child will be so proud to see you help out. You can help out in many different ways both at school and from home. You do not have to be a Room Parent or a member of the PTA to be involved. The following are a few suggestions:

  • Offer to help prepare classroom materials from home, such cutting out or making materials for math or reading games out of construction paper, making flash cards, cutting out shapes for the bulletin board, etc.;

  • Listen to students read;

  • Read to students;

  • Assist with special projects in the classroom such as cooking, plays, writing books, etc;

  • Play instructional games with individual students;

  • Send “Food for Thought” a simple snack such as pretzels to share with the class;

  • Help check out books during your child’s weekly classroom visit to the library (Resource Center);

  • Go on field trips;

  • Offer to be a guest speaker and share your talents;

  • Help in the Kindergarten and 1st grade “Writing to Read” lab;

  • Help supervise the lunchroom. Kindergartens need plenty of help opening their packages;

  • Help the room parent with class parties and the carnival booth in the spring;

  • Become a room parent who helps coordinate class parties and the class booth at the Kilgour Carnival;

  • Help take down or set up bulletin boards;

  • Sign up with your child’s teacher for weekly or bi-weekly (very productive) classroom visits;

  • Assist with traffic pick up and/or drop off;

  • Offer assistance to Office staff;

  • Share positive information about Kilgour School with others – spread the word;

  • Speak with your child’s teacher(s) to see what support is needed;

  • Support school activities/fundraisers; and

  • Attend school events.
