Kilgour Kids Care about... The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- Pennies for Patients by Ms. Frank

Starting on March 6th, Kilgour is participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, a service-learning program that gives students the unique experience of working together to help raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting against blood cancers. We are asking that everyone (students, faculty, parents, alumni, etc) at Kilgour join in this effort of raising awareness and collecting funds to benefit the mission of LLS: to find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 9 minutes someone loses their battle. Thanks to the support of people like you, doctors are getting closer to finding a cure every day! In the 1960's the 5-year survival rate for children under the age of 20 with ALL (the most common form of leukemia) went from a mere 3% to nearly 90% today! Your support is critical to help us find a cure and I hope you will join us in the fight against blood cancer.

Thank you so much for supporting LLS and Kilgour's participation in the Pennies program! Together, we can reach our goal of at least $1,000. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher. Your child's teacher may have set up an online giving page for their classroom total tally, so please check with them on that. However, if you wish to donate online to our school's online giving page, then just let your child's teacher know how much you donated and follow this link:

Teacher Luncheon

Every year the PTA organizes and caters a Faculty/Staff Luncheon for our fantastic faculty/staff. This year it is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 21. Room parents in every classroom will ask for parent volunteers to attend the children while they have lunch and recess. This allows the Kilgour faculty and staff a full hour to eat lunch together! If you would also like to help with set-up and/or clean up, please let your Room Parent(s) know.

Multicultural Fair

On Friday, March 24, 2017 Kilgour will be conducting their annual Multicultural Fair! Parents, students, staff and our local community will join together to teach the students in grades K-6 about different cultures around the world. This is an all-day event that will take place during school hours, 10:00am - 3:30pm. At last count we have 17 family tables representing 15 different countries. In order to make this event a success we will need as many volunteers from our Kilgour families as are available to participate!

A green flyer came home in your child’s folder; please return it to her mailbox or Room 1041 to RSVP your family’s participation. If you have any questions (or lost your flyer!) please contact Amira Michalowski (Ms. M) at

Outdoor Classroom by JR Verkamp

A group of parents and students helped in the fall to refresh and revitalize the educational space in Kilgour Woods. The group put up railings on the bridges, sanded and stained the bleachers and stage, cleaned and raked trails, hauled brush, built a new picnic table and did some general tidying. A big thanks to all who helped.

There are still a few dollars left in the budget which we will allocate towards a new trash can and potentially some program material to go along with the “Classroom Kit” that currently offers bags for each student to carry clipboards, seats, and other essentials for being outside. A big thanks to Ms. Clyburn and Ms. Frankenstein for embracing the idea and getting outside. From what we have heard, the kids really enjoyed the space in the fall.

The next step is to reach out to all of the classroom parents to find a volunteer who will work with teachers on how to get kids outside. Eventually we will have something formal but for now we hope to just inform our teachers about the new resource at hand. Many do not know we even have a woods! If anyone would like to volunteer to help coordinate classrooms, we could really use your help. As spring is nearly here, we have to keep pushing to get outside.

Lastly, we continue to experience trash and graffiti in the woods. It is not the end of the world and we don't need to freak out. However, if you cut through the woods on a regular basis, please take a quick moment to walk down the trail to see if there is any trash to be removed. If you don't want to help pick it up, please email JR Verkamp and he will come to do it. So everyone knows, we are NOT going to put up a fence and we are not going to put up cameras. High school kids will likely be back but hopefully they can put their trash in the cans and not spray paint….

Like always, anyone who wants to help or has ideas, please let reach out to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We would love your help.

A few Words from the PTA Wellness Committee

1. Free Salad Bar Fridays will continue through the end of the school year! We hope to continue to see increased participation and perhaps this would be something the PTA would choose to fund next year. Each week, we see an average of 100 non-lunch buyers use the salad bar. New posters designed by a Kilgour mom coming this week!

2. The art installations for the cafeteria are in progress and will be displayed as soon as completed. The mural has been approved by Administration and will be a "Farm to Kilgour" theme. Artwork by Ms Clyburn, and I have to say the sketch is amazing. We first need to project and trace the art, then we can schedule volunteersShifts to paint will be evenings and weekends. Kids will be welcome and encouraged to help paint! We’re hoping to have it completed by end of March.

3. First Annual Kilgour Strong Health Fair presented by Mr Bell will be held April 19, with a special Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course experience April 20-21. There will be costs associated with the fair, but we are still waiting for approval from Administration on our experts. A letter petitioning Kilgour parent health experts to host activity tables will be out soon. The fair will be set up similar to COSI, where the students will have 40 minutes to rotate through hands-on learning experiences according to their interests.

Health Fair focus areas, as established by Mr Bell:

Mindfulness/Stress Reduction

Preventive Care

Drug Awareness

  1.   As to Kilgour’s new tower garden initiative, seeds are planted and a harvest party is planned for those two classrooms. Ms. Egan was able to acquire another Tower Garden through the Donors Choose website. Our next step is to find more teachers interested in using and maintaining gardens before any new investments are made.

Mobile Classroom Garden by Ms. Egan (adapted from

Our students need the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and why healthy food will help them become healthy children. The students in my classroom are energetic and excited to learn new things every day. It is such a good feeling to see the sense of wonder and genuine interest on my students' faces when I am introducing new topics.

Kilgour is a large public school, serving many different backgrounds, religious beliefs, economic standards, and family dynamics. But we all enter through the same classroom door and are part of a great team. The students love sharing what they have learned and what they know with each other as well as family members.

Having a Tower Garden in our classroom will provide us with endless teaching opportunities throughout the year. We will be able to learn about the life cycles of plants, eat real food, test recipes, and learn responsibility. In the end, the children will eat what they grow. They will have ownership and pride over the Tower Garden. It will be a constant talking point and make a positive impact on our students, their families, and our school community.

We are excited to help children learn how to eat healthier, how to be more environmentally aware, and how these things can benefit not only our school, but we have a chance to help impact thoughts and views within our families and community.

Kilgour School hosts parent workshops on perfectionism and bullying

”Principal Angela Cook-Frazier explained these sessions are part of a district-wide initiative for the Growth Mind Set. An example of the initiative in action at Kilgour is Mindful Music Moments. At the beginning and end of every school day, music is played throughout the school providing time for relaxation and unification during the busy day.

Parent Erin Kelley attended the perfectionism session and plans to come to the Feb. 23 bullying program as well. “I’m here to get advice from experts,” said Kelley. “I've seen bullying, and I want to be prepared before it happens."
